Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register an FPV drone in Portugal?
Yes, if it weighs 250 g or more, has a camera able to capture personal data (unless it is a toy) or can transfer more than 80 J on impact; ANAC cites racing drones as an example. You register as an operator on uas.anac.pt and the PRT number must be visible on every drone.

Can I fly FPV with goggles on my own?
Not in the Open category. Goggles do not count as VLOS, so every FPV flight needs a human observer next to you who keeps direct visual contact with the drone.

Is drone insurance mandatory in Portugal?
Yes for drones with a maximum operating mass above 900 g: Decreto-Lei 58/2018 requires liability insurance, with minimum cover set by Portaria 2/2021. It does not apply if you already hold sports-practice liability insurance.

Where can I fly an FPV drone in Portugal?
Check the official map at dnt.anac.pt before every flight: flying is not allowed in prohibited zones or airport/heliport restriction zones. In A3 you must also stay more than 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas.

Does a home-built drone need a class label?
No. It may fly in A1 if under 250 g and slower than 19 m/s, and in A3 if under 25 kg. Ready-to-assemble kits sold as a single set do not count as privately built.

How do I get a drone pilot certificate in Portugal?
Only through ANAC at rp.anac.pt: the A1/A3 exam is online right after the course and the A2 exam is in person. The pass mark is 75%, the certificate is valid 5 years and you must be in Portugal to access the courses. Certificates from another EU state are already valid.

How much does the pilot certificate cost in Portugal?
ANAC states that it currently charges no fees for the pilot courses.
