Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register an FPV drone in Germany?
Yes, if it weighs over 249 g or has a camera. Operator registration is done only through the LBA online form, costs 20.00 EUR for a natural person, and gives you one e-ID that must be attached to every drone you fly.

Do I need a drone licence (A1/A3 certificate) in Germany?
For drones of 250 g or more in the Open category, yes. The LBA offers free online training and a 40-question multiple-choice exam; exam and certificate cost 25.00 EUR and the certificate is valid for 5 years.

Can I fly alone with FPV goggles in Germany?
In the Open category the EU rule requires unaided visual contact with the drone, except in follow-me mode or with an observer next to you watching it with the naked eye; flying on goggles relies on that observer. Only within DMFV/MFSD association rules may you fly with goggles up to 30 m above ground without an observer.

Is drone insurance mandatory in Germany?
Yes. A drone is an aircraft and its operator must hold third-party liability insurance under § 43 LuftVG; you must carry proof on every flight, and flying without it is an administrative offence. Your private policy may already cover it: ask your insurer.

Does a home-built FPV drone need a class label?
No, and you may not apply one yourself. Under 250 g with a max speed of 19 m/s it flies in A1; under 25 kg, in A3. The LBA lists home-built drones only in A1 and A3; A2 requires a C2-class drone.

Where can I fly an FPV drone in Germany?
Check the official dipul Map Tool, which also shows DMFV/MFSD model-flying fields. Within 1,000 m of airports the Open category is not allowed; over residential properties a drone that can record or transmit images or sound generally needs the owner's consent; and leisure flights in nature reserves generally need the nature authority's consent.

What is the minimum age to fly a drone in Germany?
16, which is also the age from which you can generally register as an operator. There is no minimum age for home-built drones up to 249 g, and people under 16 may fly under the direct supervision of a person who meets the requirements.
