Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register an FPV drone in Italy?
Yes. Only toys and drones under 250 g with no camera or other device that collects personal data are exempt; an FPV drone has a camera. You register on D-Flight and the operator QR code must be on the drone before you fly.

How much does D-Flight registration cost?
Registration is done with a D-Flight subscription. The Basic subscription costs 7 EUR/year incl. VAT and includes operator registration and one European QR code, which covers all your drones.

Do I need a licence or certificate to fly FPV in Italy?
For drones of 250 g or more in the Open category, yes: the A1/A3 certificate, with an online ENAC exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes, costs 31 EUR and is valid 5 years. ENAC states it is not mandatory under 250 g with a camera.

Can I fly FPV alone with goggles on?
No. ENAC only allows FPV with an observer next to the pilot who keeps direct visual contact with the drone and warns them in time. The pilot remains responsible for flight safety.

Is insurance mandatory for an FPV drone in Italy?
Yes. Regolamento UAS-IT (art. 27) requires third-party liability insurance for any UAS operation, with no weight threshold, and ENAC also applies it to sub-250 g camera drones.

Does a home-built FPV drone need a class label?
No, as long as it was built for personal use and not bought as a ready-to-fly kit. It may fly in A1 if under 250 g and in A3 if under 25 kg.

Where can I fly FPV in Italy?
Check the D-Flight maps first: Open-category flying is prohibited in safety zones (airports, heliports, airstrips). In A3 keep at least 150 m from residential, industrial, commercial and recreational areas, do not fly near roads or railways and stay below 120 m.
