XT30 vs XT60 vs XT90 — Which battery connector to use?

XT30 vs XT60 vs XT90 connectors: amperage, cells, drone class, weight and wire AWG. Which to use in your FPV build (toothpick, 5", long range).

The battery connector is the electrical joint between the pack and the rest of the drone, and picking the wrong one has real consequences: an undersized connector heats up, drops voltage under load (sag) and in the worst case melts mid-flight. The XT series (by AMASS) is the modern FPV standard: XT30, XT60 and XT90 depending on the current your build moves. The rule is simple: the bigger and more powerful the drone, the thicker the connector.

Why current matters, not cell count

Many people pick the connector by cell count ("6S = XT60"), but what melts a connector is CURRENT (amps), not voltage. Four 2207 motors on a 5" at full throttle can pull 120-150A of peak for fractions of a second. The XT60 handles ~60A continuous and peaks well above that because those pulls last milliseconds. That's why the XT60 is the 5" standard even if the number looks low: in real FPV you never hold full throttle continuously.

When to step up to XT90

Step up to XT90 when sustained draw grows: 7" and 10" long range with 2806/2810 motors, 6-8S cinelifters carrying a GoPro, or any build where you cruise at mid-high power for long stretches (not bursts). There the XT60 genuinely heats up because the current is no longer millisecond peaks but a high continuous load. The XT90 also cuts voltage drop, which on long range means more flight time.

Whoops and micros: forget XT

Below a toothpick, XT connectors are overkill and add weight. 1S whoops use BT2.0 (the 2023-2025 standard, handles ~25A with less sag than the old PH2.0), and some premium micros use A30 or GNB27. The XT30 starts to make sense on toothpicks and 3-4" cinewhoops with 2-4S packs, where draw climbs from the whoop's ~10A to 20-35A. Quick rule: 1S whoop = BT2.0, 2-4S micro = XT30, 5" = XT60, 6S+ big = XT90.
