DJI O4 Air Unit vs Walksnail Avatar: which digital system to pick

DJI O4 Air Unit vs Walksnail Avatar compared on latency, recording, weight, voltage, goggles and the built-in receiver, to pick the right FPV video system.

Feature DJI O4 Air Unit Walksnail Avatar
Latency (official) 15 ms Pro / 20 ms O4 with Goggles 3 About 22 ms average
Max recording 4K on both, up to 120 fps on Pro 1080p60; 4K on the Moonlight kit
Integrated receiver Yes, DJI radio only (RC2/RC3) No, needs ELRS or similar
Weight 8.2 g (O4) / 32 g (O4 Pro) 7.8 g (Mini 1S Lite) to 38.5 g
Input voltage 1-3S (O4) / 2-6S (O4 Pro) 1-3S (Mini 1S Lite) / 2-6S (Pro)
Compatible goggles Goggles 3, N3, Goggles 2, Integra Walksnail Avatar (Goggles X, L)

Both are digital HD video systems: a camera and a transmitter on the drone, and goggles that only work with their own system. DJI sells the O4 Air Unit in a light version and a Pro version; Walksnail Avatar has several kits, from the Mini 1S Lite for whoops to the Moonlight with 4K recording. The difference that changes the build most is the radio receiver.

Image, recording and latency

The O4 Air Unit Pro uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor and records 4K at up to 120 fps; the standard O4 uses a 1/2-inch sensor and records 4K at up to 60 fps or 1080p at 120 fps. DJI states 15 ms (Pro) and 20 ms (O4) with Goggles 3 in 1080p/100 fps race mode, and more with Goggles N3, Goggles 2 or Integra. Walksnail states about 22 ms on average. Its Pro Kit and Mini 1S Lite record 1080p at 60 fps, and the Moonlight kit records 4K at up to 60 fps. Latency depends on the goggles, so compare figures for the pair you will actually use.

The receiver: built in or separate

Both O4 air units include a radio receiver, but it only works with DJI radios: the FPV Remote Controller 3 with Goggles 3 or N3, or the Remote Controller 2 with Goggles 2 or Integra. DJI also requires Betaflight 4.3 or later with SBUS configured on the flight controller. Walksnail Avatar carries the camera and the video transmitter, but no radio receiver, so the build needs ExpressLRS or a similar link. If you already fly ELRS with your own radio, that is not a drawback: it is one more small part and the radio you already know.

Weight, voltage and price

The standard O4 weighs 8.2 g and runs on 3.7 to 13.2 V (1-3S); the O4 Pro weighs 32 g and runs on 7.4 to 26.4 V (2-6S). On the Walksnail side, the Mini 1S Lite kit weighs about 7.8 g and runs on 1-3S, while the Pro Kit and the Moonlight take up to 6S; the Moonlight weighs 38.5 g without antennas. Goggles do not cross over, so switching system means switching goggles. In our catalog Walksnail is usually somewhat cheaper than the O4, but prices vary a lot between stores, and FPVBuilder compares them for you.
