Cinewhoop or 5-inch freestyle quad? Compare prop size, batteries, ducts, agility and safety to pick the FPV drone that fits how you fly.
| Feature | Cinewhoop | Freestyle 5" |
|---|---|---|
| Prop size | 2.5" to 3.5", ducted | 5", open |
| Typical battery | 4S or 6S, small packs | 6S |
| Prop protection | Ducts around every prop | None, props exposed |
| Flight style | Slow, smooth and stable | Fast, flips, rolls, dives |
| Typical footage | Indoor tours, close-ups, events | Freestyle lines, chases, dives |
| Best environment | Indoors, near people and objects | Open outdoor spots, away from people |
Both are popular FPV builds, but they are designed for opposite jobs. A cinewhoop is a small ducted drone, usually on 2.5 to 3.5-inch props, made to fly slowly and steadily close to its subject. A 5-inch freestyle quad runs open props on 6S and trades safety margin for power and agility.
The ducts around each prop are the defining feature of a cinewhoop. They let it touch a wall, a branch or a person's arm without the prop cutting into it, which is why it suits indoor flights, events and real estate tours. The price is weight and drag: for its size, a cinewhoop is heavier, slower and less nimble than an open-prop quad, and flight times are shorter. Claims that ducts add efficiency are disputed; in practice they mostly reduce the penalty of carrying a guard.
A 5-inch freestyle quad is the reference format of FPV. It typically flies 6S with 2207 to 2306 motors at roughly 1700 to 1950KV, spinning open 5-inch props. That combination gives a large surplus of thrust for flips, rolls, power loops and dives, and it flies forward far more efficiently than a ducted drone. It can also carry a GoPro for freestyle footage. The downside is the exposed props: at that speed and power they are dangerous, so it belongs in open spaces away from people.
In our catalog this week, cinewhoop frames are clearly cheaper than 5-inch freestyle frames, but the frame is a small part of the total. Motors, flight controller, video system and battery dominate, so a complete 3-inch cinewhoop and a complete 5-inch build land in a similar price range today; FPVBuilder's live build lists show current totals. Ducts lower the risk of flying near people but do not remove it, and doing so is regulated. In the EU the rules depend on the drone's weight class and registration is often required, so check your national authority before flying.
