FPV video systems in 2026: analog vs digital

Picking your video system is probably the decision that shapes your FPV drone the most: it sets the latency you feel on the sticks, the quality of what you record and, often, the budget. In 2026 four worlds coexist. Here's the honest picture of each.

Analog (5.8 GHz)

The veteran. Camera, transmitter (VTX) and video receiver are separate, and the signal degrades gracefully: when you lose quality you get "static", not a black screen.

DJI O3 / O4 Air Unit

The high-end digital standard. The Air Unit integrates camera and transmitter in one module, and with the DJI controller it also acts as the control receiver.

Walksnail Avatar

Very good digital image. It integrates camera and VTX, but it does not integrate the control receiver: you still need a separate ExpressLRS link, just like analog.

HDZero

Digital built for low latency, the favorite of many racers who want a digital image without giving up responsiveness.

So which one should I pick?

One detail that breaks a lot of builds: digital doesn't mean "all in one". Only DJI Air Units integrate the control receiver (with a DJI controller); Walksnail and HDZero still need a separate ExpressLRS link. On FPVBuilder the compatibility engine flags this for you automatically as you combine parts.

If you go analog, a solid starter camera:
